I found a spot on the bathroom ceiling. Checked the roof and found that the leak was coming from the area around a fan exhaust vent and would have to be fixed. I checked on Nextdoor and asked some friends and neighbours for a reputable company. After narrowing it down I called Curry Roofing and was prepared to go ahead if I thought it was reasonable. The Curry Roofing fellow that came was very professional. He checked the ceiling spot with a moisture meter and said it was not wet. He then got a ladder on the outside and walked around the roof. When finished he quoted $650 to repair the problem but strongly recommended we replace the roof. He talked at length about quality shingles and the spiral nails they use to keep them from popping. He also talked about how I could transfer the new roof warranty if we sold our home. He gave me a quote and I said I would think it over and let him know if we wanted to go ahead. He suggested I not wait a long time as they were getting busy and it needed to be scheduled to avoid delays. I decided that after such a hard sales pitch on a new roof, I would get a second opinion. I chose Mark Kaufman Roofing for the second opinion based on reading some things in Nextdoor and one neighbours recommendation. The fellow that came out (Tyler) checked the bathroom ceiling as before. He did not use a moisture meter. Instead, he got a ladder to go into the attic to see what he thought of the leak and the damage on the inside above the spot. He came back down saying all the wood was in good shape and the spot had mostly dried. I asked him about the overall condition of the roof, he thought the shingles themselves had another few years in them and that the repairs would be $450. His quote detail in explaining the work to be done was almost the same in explanation as the Curry quote. Both young men were professional and the lead time for repairs was about the same. The warranties were the same but Curry Roofing wanted a 50% deposit up front. Mark Kaufman did not ask for any down payment prior to the work being done. I was not happy to be pressed with buying a new roof when I felt I had more time with the existing shingles so, I went with Mark Kaufman Roofing. Today the repair crew of Leonardo & Zefereino (not sure of the spelling?) came to fix the roof. They did an excellent job and were professional in every regard. They answered some additional questions about roofing for me as well as doing a roof walkabout to check any other small things that might be wrong. They left us feeling very good about choosing their company. I'm sure there are other good roofing companies out there. For us, we highly recommend Mark Kaufman Roofing and will be comfortable with them in the next few years when the shingles need replacing.

UPDATE: They finally fixed the leaking issue. They took off the roof that they originally installed and replaced it with new material. We haven't had an issue since. UPDATE: The staff that answer the phones are still very friendly and helpful. My roof seems to have an issue every year. It's very hard to get a phone call returned from the repair staff. We are on the third week waiting for a return phone call. I've called and they say they will call back. But nothing. The staff their are very friendly and helpful. They are good at returning phone calls. I had a metal roof installed about 3 years old and unfortunately it started leaking right after the installation and every year after we have a strong storm BUT they came out promptly to take care of it. Hopefully this last time will be a permanent fix. Mark Kaufman came out himself this last time to look at it so I'm hoping that it won't leak again.

Horrible! We spent $2200 to repair a small part of our roof. I had to call them out two more time because I was still leaking. Eventually It was leaking so bad I had to pull the ceiling down in my closet to reveal black mold everywhere. I have video and photos showing the mold and that they only patched to plywood instead of replacing. They totally ripped us off. So be careful and check the the reviews to see how long after the work was done was the review written. Of course your roof might seem fixed a week later but what about in a couple months later. Now we have to pay again to get it fixed properly!

This is copied and pasted from the Nextdoor blog. I also posted this on the Mark Kaufman Northport Google site. The reference to Paul Donofrio is from the Northport site. >> Okay. so here is the follow-up to my original post about a month ago. To review the basics, I had Kaufman fix my roof leak in Feb, 2017. We were gone from Feb to October because of illness. When we came back, it was clear the repair failed. The fellow from Kaufman came back and said the repair was not done right. He "fixed" it again. After the first driving rain in April, it was clear the repair of the repair failed as well. . I called Kaufman and I was told the warranty expired in Feb 18, one year after the first repair. It didn't matter to them that both repairs failed. The CSR basically told me "tough luck". I called Curry and he took me into the attic. Curry said what Kaufman did was a "mess". That is verbatim. He showed me all sorts of things where Kaufman's work was shoddy. I must confess I am not a roofer, so I did not understand everything, but it was pretty clear Kaufman's work was substandard. Curry took pictures and a picture is work a thousand words. Learn from my mistake. NEVER use Kaufman roofing.
