14th November 2018 This is just to say that your should treat any recommendation on here with a pinch (or shovel) of salt after receiving some very poor service from one contractor called Ricky. His company goes by the name of Powell Roofing. He was hired to re-lay the porch roof tiles, repoint some ridge tiles and replace the odd few tiles that had broken off the main roof in the stormy weather. £950 is what he wanted and I didn't argue since he came recommended after all. Bit excessive for 2 days work even after the labourers took their cut and the odd replacement tile was accounted for, but I thought I was paying for a top quality tradesperson. I let him crack on, maintained a steady supply of coffee and biscuits and I paid promptly on completion. Afterwards over the next few days I discovered many of the tiles on the main roof were simply not replaced, he had dumped a massive load of old mortar pointing and roofing laths into my green general waste wheely bin and worst of all he left a leak in my roof. So now when it rains I have a trickle coming right into my bedroom. The water has utterly warped the built in wardrobes and damaged some very precious books. I'm so angry because this could have been avoided had he returned to repair the leak in the days after I told him. Instead he strung me along saying he would return shortly and then again after his next job etc etc. I even stressed how if left much longer it would most likely lead to an insurance claim. The following week when I chased him, he then lied saying that he had been trying to call me but it was going to answerphone. I asked whether he had left a message. He answered "No" (wonder why?). There's never been anything wrong with my phone. Then he offered to come on the Thursday. Which came and went with no sign of him- no call, no text, message or email. Now I'm left having to go through an insurance claim which I was trying to avoid all along so I didn't have to pay inflated premiums for the next 5 years. *****UPDATE***** 5th April 2019 Ricky was back in touch following the review and arranged to come back within a few days to address the problems I'd described. He accepted he should have returned much sooner but that was overrun with work at the time and it was genuinely an oversight. That's plausible and I have to accept that we're all human and will make overlook things from time to time. Ricky also felt that I should have mentioned that he did return once a few days after the job to fix a leaking gutter. Which is true. I didn't include that in the original review because he was back to retile the neighbours porch anyway and I pointed out the my gutter leak in passing, so i felt it was more opportunistic than anything. The leak in roof was thought to be down to some pointing that had broken away at the top of the chimney as opposed to any missing tiles or damaged flashing. Which Ricky did repoint and rectify. It's not rained for a little while now, but I trust that was source of the leak. Ricky did say to get back in touch with him if there were still any concerns. That's exactly what I would expect from a quality tradesman. My wardrobes have dried out now and since the damage isn't visible once the doors are closed, I've abandoned my insurance claim. Would I hire Ricky again? Yes. Would I make clear beforehand what my expectations from a quality tradesman are? Definitely.
Phoned on Monday morning when I discovered a roof tile on the floor Ricky came Tuesday morning looked at the job agreed a price and did it for me straight away fantastic service and did a great job would definitely recommend this firm to anyone with roof problems
Amazing people who solved a leaking flat roof I had with the correct solution promptly and now glad to enjoy the space. Were also kind and professional enough to point out other issues I did not notice myself to resolve in the near future before things got worse for me.
